After traveling into the cylinder head, the air enters the cylinders themselves. An engine may have any number of cylinders, and they can be set up in several arrangements. The most common designs are inline and V. Most automotive engines use four, six, or eight cylinders, but there are also three-, five-, ten-, and twelve-cylinder engines on the market. As their names imply, an inline engine has the cylinders all in a row, and a V engine has two lines of cylinders arranged in a V. Nearly all four-cylinder engines and some six-cylinder engines are inline, while most engines with six or eight are V designs.
