Smartphones and Testing

The latest crop of cell phones combines a built-in global positioning system (GPS) and accelerometer with the ability to download and run complex programs. This makes them handy for measuring a car’s performance, and there are several programs that can use the GPS and accelerometer data to calculate skidpad numbers and similar times to a dragstrip. The more accurate versions have the capability to tie into the car’s electronics to record engine RPM and other data as well. These may not be quite as accurate as real dragstrip timing equipment or professional data acquisition, but the results can still make a useful comparison.
