30.4 The Road Ahead

I would tell you that you are now capable of building the back end to any website, but that’s not quite right. You are now capable of building any website that works on HTTP (which is the vast majority of websites on the Internet). As of 2011, the World Wide Web has been playing with a new protocol called Websockets. Its use is far more limited than HTTP, but in key instances, it is a powerful and useful alternative to HTTP. Django has yet to add the tools required to properly handle the new protocol (few frameworks have), but discussion is under way to Get It Right and to continue to make Django the incredible project it is.
