Smart Sensing Architectures

There is rising hope for a firm and well-structured networking infrastructure interconnecting the ever shrinking smart sensors for adopting new and low cost integrated miniaturised technologies in conjunction with sensor friendly wireless technology and Internet infrastructure.

To this effect we celebrated the last decade as an exciting period for global push towards deployment of homogeneous sensors using the wireless as an enabler.

Despite heavy global investments and dedication of research communities, however, we feel whilst traditional communications are pushing for higher bandwidths and wider coverage, the promotion of energy critical scarce resource networking such as WSN gives the wrong idea to younger researchers. For this reason we see more research than deployment of smart sensor systems than expected.

To this end the content of this chapter stays brief but objective. We therefore look at the uses and applications of DSS at the architectural level to show the need for a set of simple but adaptive and flexible infrastructures that can use them as a single core or multi-core processing smart sensor and actuator devices to support new viable applications upon an understanding of:

  • immediate deployment of ready to use potential applications;
  • modularity in the design for a wider deployment coverage;
  • appreciation of global scale market factors;
  • deployment under agile production for reduced cost per unit;
  • inclusion of higher intelligence ...
