Introduction

Three chapters in Part 3 look into the future trends of network-based distributed computing. Chapter 7 covers computational grids and data grids, including major national grids built in the US, Europe, and China. We study peer-to-peer (P2P) overlay networks and examine real P2P systems built in recent years. Finally, we present sensor networks and radio-frequency identification (RFID) and global positioning systems (GPS) for building the Internet of Things (IoT). Social networks are assessed in web-scale service applications. We examine ubiquitous grids, P2P systems, and clouds for future Internet applications.
