Postproduction is the phase in which the sound and picture gathered in production are transformed into the film seen by the audience. The editing suite is thus the crucible of filmmaking, and editing—or working with an editor—will teach you more about your directing than anything else. Most filmmakers edit their early work, and this is as it should be; later you will want a creative editor as a collaborative partner.
