COVERAGE AND THE SHOOTING SCRIPT
The specific shooting and editing strategy you employ for each scene in your film is called coverage, and it describes the number of shots, angles, and style of shooting you will use to “cover” the scene. There are no right or wrong answers to the question of coverage—how you shoot a scene is at the center of the director’s art. The type and amount of shots depend on a number of interlocking factors, principally the scene’s dramatic importance and shape, your visual conception, and the time and financial resources available to shoot it. When devising coverage, remember that what you gather in the field determines the success of your editing.
