Recognizing Different Styles of Wedding Photography

Suppose that two photographers were asked to shoot the same wedding. One photographer used only a traditional style, and the other photographer took a photojournalistic approach. As the couple looked through the albums after the wedding, they’d see that although both photographers were at the same wedding, the end result was completely different.

In the following sections, I describe four styles of wedding photography: traditional, photojournalistic, fashion, and artistic. (You can mix these styles during the course of a wedding, as you find out later in this chapter.)

remember.eps The style you choose to capture a wedding with has a large impact on how much control you take during a wedding and how you narrate the day. Consider the different methods available to you and determine which style (or mix of styles) best fits your artistic vision. After you choose a style, consider shooting all of your weddings with that style in mind. Doing so keeps your end product (the wedding photos) consistent and can give your work a “signature look.” Knowing your style in advance is also important so that you can communicate it to your prospective clients. You want to ensure that you and the couple are on the same page and that they know exactly what style of pictures they will be receiving from you.
