Stocking Up on Tools of the Trade

Choosing the right equipment can be a bit daunting. The different brands and multitude of camera models and lenses, all with tech specs, can leave you scratching your head and wondering where to start. Though I believe that doing your own research to find what works best for you is important, I can take out some of the guesswork by outlining features to look for in the gear that you choose.

tip.eps As you look over the equipment list and do a price check online or at your local camera store, you'll probably notice that most of these pieces are worth a pretty penny. You may find yourself in the Catch-22 of needing the gear to shoot the wedding but needing the wedding job to pay for the gear! I'd like you to keep this phrase in mind: "Those who can't buy, rent." Don't feel the need to spend your life savings on your photography tools. Instead, buy what you can afford and rent the rest. As you book weddings, set aside part of your earnings to pay for the rentals, and then set aside a separate portion in a savings account that will go toward purchasing new equipment.
