Exploring Photographic Styles

arrow Discovering different types of photography

arrow Using various styles to create a complete story

If you visit an art gallery and meander through the exhibits, you’ll notice that various pieces are categorized by a distinct style that makes each work unique. An Impressionistic painting by Claude Monet, for example, has a much different look than a Surrealist painting by Salvador Dalí. Similarly, if you compare a black-and-white landscape photograph by Ansel Adams to a vibrantly colored landscape taken by Peter Lik, you’ll see how photographic style can affect how you feel about a picture.

So what is style, exactly? Style can be defined as a set of characteristics and techniques that artists use to showcase their creative vision. Like any art form, style also applies to wedding photography. This chapter covers the most common styles found in wedding photography and how you can incorporate various aspects of each in a wedding to tell a complete story.
