How Video Works
To understand digital video, we have to know how digital video differs from analog video. Analog video is still the most common format used in television and consumer videotape recorders. Like film, video works by the rapid display of many still images, one after the other. This creates the illusion of real motion because the still images replace each other on the screen more quickly than your eye can register. In film, the rate of these images is 24 frames, or individual images, per second.
