4. Combinational Building Blocks

While it is possible to design all combinational (and indeed sequential) circuits in terms of logic gates, in practice this would be extremely tedious. It is far more efficient, in terms of both the designer’s time and the use of programmable logic resources, to use higher level building blocks. If we were to build systems using TTL or CMOS integrated circuits on a printed circuit board, we would look in a catalog and choose devices to implement standard circuit functions.
