1. Introduction

In this chapter we will review the design process, with particular emphasis on the design of digital systems using hardware description languages (HDLs) such as SystemVerilog. The technology of CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) integrated circuits will be briefly revised and programmable logic technologies will be discussed. Finally, the relevant electrical properties of CMOS and programmable logic are reviewed.
