11 Designing the musician-machine interface

 

Overview

It is said that a computer system is only as good as the people who use it. However, it is often the interface — the means by which people communicate with the computer — that is the limiting factor. This is equally true of computer music systems. This chapter considers the different ways in which people interact with machines.

It introduces the subject of human-computer interaction (HCI) and explains the variety of ways in which computer systems are operated. It then describes the common models by which interfaces to electronic musical instruments are designed, and considers their relative advantages and disadvantages.
