It’s easy to tell if a photo is under- or overexposed. All you have to do is review it on your camera’s LCD monitor. Is it too bright? Too dark? If so, you can apply a corrective influence one way or another. Sort of like when you let go of the bowling ball and lean to influence its path.

The technical aspects of accomplishing this: learning what to call different elements (exposure value), tracking exposure on your camera, knowing the different metering modes, playing back photos, reading histograms, knowing how to use AE Lock, and applying other troubleshooting techniques.
