Back in high school, I read Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, one of those datasets formerly known as a book, reproduced in the millions and therefore in little danger of disappearing when some unique URL goes dead. Aside from Ahab and the Whale, one episode has stuck with me through the years, and I know why. It’s about networks. I recently reread it.

It’s Chapter 72, “The Monkey-Rope,” and it describes a bit of whaler’s gear called by that name.
