I love the term information architecture because it explains the role just so clearly. Some people view an information architect (IA) as a resource who knows how to generate sitemaps and wireframes. Others may think an IA is a resource who understands customer’s wants, needs, and online habits and can transform that knowledge into the perfect website experience. Well, those are both true, but what they also do is to ascertain the communication objectives of the client, along with their desired outcomes for the customer’s online experience, and organize (or architect) the information to achieve those goals. That’s a lot of stuff to know—they’re smart!
