Assignment 30Portrait Lighting Styles

“It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing to make a portrait of who they are.”

—Paul Caponigro

Purpose: To Learn to Use Lighting Styles and Positions.

Part 1

The following seven portraits were part of a joint project between OSU and Western Oregon University in which OSU photo majors, Tomas Patlan and Jerome Stretch, photographed WOU graduating music majors. Using one light and white card reflectors, replicate each of the following seven lighting styles. You won't be able to achieve the back and hair light effects with one light so only try for the basic style, forty-five, butterfly, modified or side butterfly, side, rim, long, and short.
