Anyone who is determined to collect information about a particular individual — such as a potential identity thief — can often find that information quickly and easily just by consulting publicly available information sources.

After information about you is online, it’s hard to get rid of it; information online tends to persist indefinitely because the whole system is so decentralized; you can get it removed from one site, but 20 other sites have already copied that information. It’s far better to be cautious from the get-go about putting your information out there.
