Radiometric and Photometric Quantities

B.1 RADIOMETRIC QUANTITIES

Radiometry deals with the measurement of energy in an electromagnetic field. We shall define a few radiometric quantities that are of interest to image processing.

B.1.1 Radiant Energy

Radiant energy, Q, is the energy contained in an electromagnetic field or the energy delivered to a given receptor by such a field and its unit is joules (J).

B.1.2 Radiant Flux

Radiant flux, Φ, or power is the time rate of change of radiant energy, Q. It is the rate at which radiant energy is transferred between two regions. It is measured in watts, which is joules per second.
