4	Previsualization

 

ENVISIONING THE FINISHED FILM

Previsualization is largely underutilized by today’s filmmaking community. However, its capabilities are so vast and powerful, that more efficient filmmaking can proceed. We can define previsualization as methods that allow the filmmaker to envision how elements of the film will look prior to principal photography. It is important to note that previsualization is not a new term and has been part of filmmaking from the moment that a director made sketches on a restaurant napkin outlining how a shot should look through the camera, or from the moment that an art director moved little cardboard cutouts to signify where various set pieces should be placed.
