[1] Plesiosynchronous, or nearly synchronous, refers to a system in which separate network nodes use nominally identical (but not synchronous) master clocks. The system handles minor drift between the clocks by occasionally inserting or removing pad bits or multibit symbols. The most familiar example was the international telecom network prior to the advent of SONET/SDH.
