MiniDisc is the first real consumer application where the medium is not a tape, but a rewritable disc, with all its benefits.

When Compact Disc came on the market, the conversion from analog audio to digital data was performed in a fairly straight-forward way. In other words, the data are a true representation of the analog audio. This conversion method needs a huge amount of data if we want it to be an accurate representation of the input audio.
