Digital Audio

In digital audio, sound is represented by a sequence of numbers that correspond to the signal level at a predetermined interval. A digital audio signal consists of binary numbers, which use only the digits 0 and 1. These 1s and 0s are called bits (short for binary digits), and they are represented by only two voltages, called low, or off (close to 0 volts), and high, or on (close to the maximum voltage).

The following example shows a sequence of binary numbers:

	11010001 00011111 01001010 11101010 10110111 10101010
