Preface

Much has changed in the world of digital asset management since I wrote the first edition in 2004. Back then manufacturers were looking for all-encompassing products that could meet the needs of document archives, brand management, image libraries and audiovisual media management.

Like most universal products, they met most of the needs of most of the people, but at a cost. Since 2004, there has emerged a number of stripped-down products that more closely meet the requirements of a single sector.

My interest and my background are in applications for television broadcast and postproduction. In this sector many of the original applications were for news archives, with the need to search and browse the archive.
