10 Content Description Standards

Introduction

Previous chapters have described how content can be indexed, categorized, and searched. Not unnaturally, there have been many proposals to standardize the way that content is described in the index database. Such a move will ease the interoperability between applications.

The complexity of audiovisual content and the wide range of applications have led to several frameworks emerging, each focused on one area of use. The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) has developed a content description standard for audiovisual content.
