DHCP monitoring in Windows 2000 offers many different counters that an administrator can use to help evaluate the state of the DHCP environment. Windows 2000 also includes enhanced audit logging, allowing an administrator to determine many things, including who owned an IP address and when.
DHCP is a very elegant protocol that operates transparently on the network. But when it does break, an administrator needs to jump into action before the network comes to a screeching halt. By using IPCONFIG and WINIPCFG, most DHCP problems can be solved, but there are times when more intuition and skills are required to hunt down and alleviate the problem.
