Tissue engineering of non-bladder tubular organs

Abstract

Methodologies developed for the tissue engineering of bladder and bladder-related neo-organs may be regarded as a foundational technology platform for the regeneration of alternative, laminarly organized hollow organs. These may include, but are not limited to, lung, elements of the vasculature, components of the gastrointestinal tract and male/female reproductive organs. In this chapter, we examine how key principles applied for the regeneration of bladder may be used more broadly. In particular, we focus on identifying elements of this platform that have facilitated the transition of tubular organ regeneration from academic proof-of-concept to clinical viability.
