PGP and Kerberos

Authentication allows the recipient of a digital signal to have confidence in the integrity of the sender and the message. Authentication protocols can be based on either conventional private-key encryption systems like DES or on public-key systems like RSA. Authentication in public-key systems uses digital signatures.

Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) is a unique product in that it serves the dual role of a powerful encryption package and a sophisticated authentication package. PGP was written by Phil Zimmerman in 1990, using the RSA algorithm for encryption.
