Chapter 15. Microsoft Certificate Server

IN THIS CHAPTER

  • How Certificate Authorities Work

  • Generating a Root Certificate

  • Issuing, Managing, and Revoking Certificates

In the first section of this book, you learned how certificates are a key element in the use of encryption. If you haven't guessed by now, certificates are an important part of current security and encryption schemes as a means of identifying people and systems.

If you need to control security for an organization, either for secure authorization purposes or for creating secure communication applications, you may find yourself needing to operate your own Certificate Server. This is easily done using Microsoft's Certificate Server (called Certificate Services in Windows 2000).
