This chapter discusses distributed security in Windows 2000. Security has been a key part of Windows NT programming since the operating system was introduced to developers in 1992. Although the original security manipulation functions were very low-level and difficult to use, security programming became much easier with the release of Windows NT 4.0, which included high-level functions for access control. Windows 2000 extends these functions to offer support for security when interacting with non-Windows operating systems.
