XML is taking over the world.

Well not really, but eXtensible Markup Language (XML) is the native file format for Open Office Org, AbiWord, and the iWork applications from Apple (Keynote and Pages). Microsoft is moving towards a web-centered XML specification, which will allow XML files to be created and edited by any of the Office components. The current version for Windows supports some XML export but version 12 of Office (due in 2007) is expected to improve on this significantly. There are many other XML tools, filters, and editors available, some proprietary and some open-source.
