The national television networks’ election coverage is filled with the latest and greatest 3D techniques, shown off in a glorious festival of colored pixels, driven by metadata received from outlying correspondents who are feeding the database with constant updates. 3D models are also frequently used to recreate news events where cameras weren’t present, such as natural disasters and transportation accidents. Broadcasters and program makers can learn from some of the tools used in other industries, such as architecture, banking, energy exploration and medicine, and we’ll examine some of those in this chapter.
