Appendix E. Folding Ruler

Rulers come in all sizes and types—from the 6-inch one that you might have on your desk to the autocrat that lords it over a vast domain. With regular markings in feet, inches and inch fractions, the folding ruler is a handy measuring device that folds and opens smoothly and is easy to read and use in concrete work, surveying, and excavation. Carpenters use it to measure short distances for placing studs. Masons use it to space brick courses accurately. Compact when folded—needing no more room than the average ruler—folding rulers have traditionally been made of wood or metal but increasingly are made of fiberglass to withstand water and rough use on the construction site.
