It’s payday. In a ritual dating back to ancient China, you hand an employee a piece of paper representing wages earned and benefits provided. Nods are exchanged but seldom any words. Or, the check may simply go into the mail or direct deposit without any communication at all. Many leaders view the paycheck as the prime stimulus—perhaps the only stimulus—to employee productivity and retention. Usually, such leaders get what they pay for: no more, no less.
