This chapter is for developers who are new to Windows driver development. It provides basic background about the core Windows operating system and how drivers operate in that environment as well as an introduction to kernel-mode programming.

If you are new to Windows drivers, read this chapter for concepts and terminology that are essential for understanding the topics in this book. If you are an experienced driver developer, skim this chapter and check A Basic Vocabulary at the end. If you are familiar with those terms and concepts, you should be able to skip this chapter.
