Code editors ride waves of popularity depending on the code being written and the target platform that the code will run on. During the early heydays of Unix, Vi and Emacs ruled the roost. Then came GUI desktop environments where rich graphic text editors became the norm. Now that a new platform is emerging, code editors need to evolve to offer a best-in-breed code-authoring experience. However, that will take time to develop as the new way to think about writing code diffuses throughout the phone and tablet coding ecosystem.
