Chapter 9

Mechanical Design

Steve Zeise,    Aerospace Electronics Industry

In this chapter, Steve Zeise starts with a review of the basics of mechanical design allowing project leaders or nonmechanical engineers to communicate effectively with their mechanical counterparts. Packaging and thermal design are addressed together concentrating on the fundamentals but with enough detail to allow the project manager to guide the initial product development. Mechanisms are covered focusing on robust mechanism design and methods for calculating loads and forces. The chapter finishes with a look at analysis and test, discussing how to use Finite Element Analysis effectively ending with a simplified approach to solving vibration problems.
