Chapter Seventeen: NYMag.com: Simple Standards, Sexy Interfaces

Founded in 1968 by Clay Felker and Milton Glaser, New York is one of the country’s oldest lifestyle magazines. Its website (www.nymag.com) [17.1] is one of my favorite examples of editorial design done so very well: the site’s vibrant palette and bold typography perfectly complement the magazine’s brassy-but-refined brand, infusing its pages with a personality that makes reading a joy. What’s more, the site’s interface attains a level of complexity rarely seen on the average editorial site; a few minutes’ exploration will reward the curious reader with some interface design thinking that is at once intricate yet intuitive, complex but compelling.
