Chapter 5. Organize learning sequences

Putting the pieces together

A course is just a sequence of learning experiences enabled by a designer and pursued by learners. Some courses allow but one sequence for all learners, while others let each learner follow a unique path. In this chapter we consider what designers must do so that learners find exactly the sequence of experiences that lets them accomplish their learning goals. First we look at some common ways of sequencing experiences in lessons. Then we look at pieces you are likely to need in your learning sequences. Finally, we present principles and guidelines for sequencing topics in new ways.
