10.12. IN CLOSING ...

10.12.1. Summary

  • Learners in WBT often give up, drop out, or slow down because they lack the high levels of motivation required to overcome the difficulties posed by WBT.

  • Set clear expectations. State your requirements for learners and gather their expectations for the course. Require learners to commit to working hard and finishing the course.

  • In every corner of the course-in every activity, on every page-make sure learners know ''What's in it for me?" WIIFMs keep learners working hard.

  • Make WBT fun and interesting. Make it more like a game than an inquisition. Test and immediately fix annoying glitches. Continually improve the course. Make it dynamic. Incorporate real-world and real-time data into activities. Include evolving content.

  • Bribe people to learn. Offer them explicit rewards: money, coffee mugs, membership in a club for successful learners, Learner of the Month awards, certificates of achievement, and whatever else can motivate them.

  • Pace and prompt learners. Have learners commit to a schedule. Remind them to stick to that schedule.

  • Intervene if you have unmotivated learners or troublemakers. Take corrective steps early to help learners in trouble and to protect others.

10.12.2. For more
