10.4. FEATURE THE WIIFM

What's a WIIFM? WIIFM is an abbreviation for the question continually asked by prospective WBT learners: ''What's In It For Me?" A WIIFM is any credible answer to that question. Think of WIIFMs as the fuel pellets of motivation.

10.4.1. Promote the advantages of online learning

Learners without much experience with WBT or CBT may expect the course to closely resemble classroom instruction. They may feel frustrated because they cannot apply their well-developed skills of classroom learning. They may long for some of the pleasant aspects of the classroom experience, while not noticing or seeking out the better aspects of online learning.

It is up to you to explicitly point out the advantages of electronic learning and of the course in particular. Remind learners that they are acquiring valuable new learning skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.

10.4.2. Signal the importance of the course

Let learners know that their organization values training and that it values your course in particular. A clear message from upper management can help. Use of online training at U.S. West Dex increased after e-mail messages from the CEO encouraged employees to take the courses [103].
