11.7. ENCOURAGE LEARNERS TO FORM "NATIONS"
Medieval universities drew students from many countries. The students from each country would often band together into groups, called nations, for self-protection in a foreign land, to combat homesickness, and to study more effectively. Within their nations, students could discuss in their native language the lectures delivered in Latin or in the language of the host country.
Our courses can take a similar approach. Let learners set up discussion groups and chat sessions where they can help one another in their native language. Consider letting learners with the same language and culture work together on projects and in activities.
