Part I. Getting Oriented

There’s nothing romantic about exploring the Web. We’re not Lewis and Clark, packing up our lives and heading West to discover unknown parts of the Americas. No one dreams of discovering the hidden treasures of the Web, and there’s not usually a significant reward for being brave and venturing out into the world beyond Google and our Web-mail applications.

Exploring the Web is usually purely utilitarian, like walking into a new store for the first time. Although we’ve seen a thousand stores in the past, the new one is bound to be a bit different than all the others, so we need to orient ourselves to the new environment.
