Handling video playback on the Web is a pretty basic idea. You create an interface for controlling the video and then simply stream the video into the player. But for some reason, video players online vary as wildly as, well, anything else.

YouTube, Yahoo, CNN, NYTimes, and other sites have all come up with decent players that could easily become a standard, but developers don’t seem to be learning from the majors and leveraging these designs on their own sites. Still, some of the major sites seem to be learning from each other, incrementally approaching a more standardized method of handling playback controls. And that’s what we’ll explore here.
