When the Web first came into existence, pages were mostly text. Over time, thanks in part to improving layout standards and the ubiquity of digital cameras and mobile phones, images have become central to the browsing experience. This shift toward content that is primarily visual introduces new challenges and opportunities for developing intuitive and powerful user interfaces for browsing, searching, and filtering visual content.

INTRODUCING VISUAL BROWSING

Visual browsing refers to all the ways we find and consume digital image content, such as:

  • Browsing images or photos using text attributes or tags—for example, on Google Images and Flickr
  • Using images in queries to describe attributes that are hard to describe with text—as on Like.com
  • Using images to facilitate wayfinding and navigation in the real world—such as on Google Maps and Photosynth
  • Reading barcode images on mobile devices—like on RedLaser and NeoReader
  • Augmented reality and near field computing-such as Yelp Monocle ...
