Planning Capacity

Planning for appropriate levels of capacity ensures that all design requirements are met, such as scalability and resource availability, as described in Chapter 2. Capacity planning helps you determine how much your architecture needs to scale, and it helps you select appropriate software and hardware (network, servers, and storage).

Tip

Perform capacity planning before selecting software and hardware. A common pitfall is to select hardware and software, then try to make it fit your capacity requirements.

In modeling capacity planning, formulate initial capacity planning based upon estimated usage or industry averages, and plan to support scaling for maximum capacity.
