Chapter 2What Is Game Design?

When I tell people I’m a game designer, the conversation generally goes something like this.

Me: I’m a game designer.
You: Oh, the programming?
Me: No, but I work with the programmers.
You: The art?
Me: No, but I work with the artists.
You: Ummm …
Me: I design the system, the rules of how to play. And then I work with the rest of the team, artists, programmers, writers, and so on to make the game playable. Sometimes if the game is really large, we have a producer who oversees and manages all the logistics. Then I get to focus on how the game works.
