User testing (or play testing) is an enlightening experience that should be included throughout the design process. Additionally, testing should be done directly with kids whenever possible to gather the most useful information. It’s unfair to expect parents or other adults to know how kids will react to programs, both in terms of the appeal of the game and the way in which it is used. By directly observing children using your program several times throughout design, you can avoid problems and continually develop your own intuition on how kids play.
