AC/DC Power

A reliable power source is a basic requirement of a highly available system. Most computer equipment accepts commercially available alternating current (AC) power. Some equipment is designed to work with direct current (DC) power sources such as those found in telephone company central offices. Power supplies convert the AC or DC power to the DC levels required by the equipment.

In some cases, such as the Sun Enterprise 10000 server, the AC power is converted through bulk power supplies to 48 Volt DC, which is routed throughout the chassis. Programmable DC-to-DC converters are used to change the voltage to the levels required by internal components.
